East Carolina University officially dedicated the Stewart Johnson Stadium in the presence of Tapley O. Johnson, III, president of TAPCO Underwriters, Inc., in a ceremony prior to the Pirates' match versus Campbell on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014. Johnson pledged $1.25 million to the East Carolina University Educational Foundation, also known at the Pirate Club, in March 2010. The gift topped his initial gift 2009, which set up a $250,000 football position endowment in memory of his great uncle and ECU Athletics Hall of Fame member Jim Johnson. The additional $1 million provided the necessary funds to assist with the enhancement of facilities in the Terry Holland Sports Complex. The stadium, named in honor of his daughter Mary Stewart Johnson and opened in the summer of 2011, features a 1,000-seat capacity, including 192 chair back seats and numerous added fan amenities. The sand-based field measures 120 yards by 75 yards with Tifway 419 Bermuda grass and has a state of the art drainage system that can drain up to 26 inches an hour. A fully air-conditioned and carpeted press box comprising two radio booths, a television booth and three camera platforms rises behind the purple chair back seats. Amenities for those in attendance include a concession stand, ample restroom facilities, new scoreboard with video board and state of the art sound system. |
| Multipurpose Turf Field |
| ADDRESS: 100 Ficklen Drive - Greenville, NC 27858-4353 |
| One of the newest facilities within East Carolina's ever-growing on-campus athletic footprint is the Multipurpose Turf Field, which formally opened its gates on October 1, 2019. While initially designed for predominant use by the Pirates' lacrosse and soccer programs to offer a vital and conducive off-season workout option away from Johnson Stadium, the venue features a 68,000 square-foot Prestige XT Synthetic (i.e. FieldTurf) playing surface that allows functionality for many other ECU teams to utilize throughout the year. Situated along Charles Boulevard and adjacent to the Cliff Moore Practice Complex, the Multipurpose Turf Field is easily accessible by car (Minges Lot) and on foot via a short walk from the Williams-Harvey Teams Sports Building, Ward Sports Medicine Building and the nationally-certified strength & conditioning amenities inside the Murphy Center. |
